Digging through the house

March 27, 2011

Vintage means so much to so many people.  For us it is about the story, the history behind an object. When we acquire an item we wonder about who owned it, what it was used for, what it meant to them. Did they like it? Was it special to them or just something that was put away for someday?

Recently Rudie’s grandparent’s home had an estate sale and we had the privilege to be able to go through the house and pick up various items that spoke to us. We were fortunate to be able to do this and were able to find treasures.

These beautiful paintings were done by Rudie’s Great-Grandfather and brought over from Germany when his Grandparents moved here in the 1950’s.  It means so much to us for the historical and familial context but also because they are lovely. The image of the woods with the tranquil river running through, a stone bridge and the changing trees – it all brings a sense of tranquility to the room.

Having these paintings by family brings us a lovely touch of our heritage, of our son’s heritage to our home. We look at these every day and remember them in a small way – with each brush stroke, each memory, each color blend the painter we never knew is with us one more time.
